Dongzhi festival 冬至(dōngzhì) or Winter Solstice
By Angela Chen Updated: 2022-12-22

It’s Dongzhi festival 冬至(dōngzhì) or Winter Solstice today. Winter Solstice is the shortest day in the year, usually falls on December 22.

The origins of this festival can be traced back to the yin 阴(yīn) and yang 阳(yáng) philosophy of balance and harmony in Chinese culture. After this celebration, there will be days with longer daylight hours and therefore an increase in positive energy flowing in. And I think that's also why we eat warm things like 汤圆(tāngyuán) and 饺子(jiǎozi) .

In the southern parts of China, people making and eating 汤圆(tāngyuán) or glutinous rice ball at Dongzhi festival, whereas northern Chinese will eat dumplings, 饺子(jiǎozi). Both 汤圆(tāngyuán) and 饺子(jiǎozi) are symbols of reunion.

Have you tried 汤圆(tāngyuán) or 饺子(jiǎozi) before? Which one you prefer?
